is our hope that viewing this web site inspires people to better understand
the important contribution persons of African decent have made in shaping
our great country. Here
in Newport, Rhode Island we have numerous burial markers to remind us of
the legacy left by those Africans and later African Americans who graced
our city with their presence. From 1696 when the first documented slave
ship, the ‘Sea Flower’, touched our shores, to the present,
African Americans have worked, raised their families and prospered in the
City By The Sea. The God's Little Acre burial ground is a living history testament that much of what we think we know of American History has not fully included the lives and deaths of fellow Americans of African decent. This web site is dedicated to their lives and the hope that the next generation of American history will include their legacies.
